SYD KROCHMALNY
Syd Krochmalny, ALGORYTHM OF HATE, 2024.
FROM HATE RESEARCH PROJECT 2008-2025
Syd Krochmalny is an artist, researcher, and writer. His multifaceted work spans visual art, writing, curation, and historical inquiry, redefining the artist as an autarkic creator. By integrating theory and practice, Krochmalny examines themes such as power, representation, language, seduction, desire, and violence, transforming them into artistic actions that leverage transgression and excess to challenge established structures. His work explores intersections of materiality and concept, reality and fiction, intimacy and monumentality, individuality and collectivity, and performance and everyday life.

Krochmalny’s multimedia creations—writings, paintings, videos, installations, performances, sculptures, music, animation, and curation—have been exhibited at renowned institutions, including the Museo Reina Sofía, Harvard University, the Americas Society, São Paulo Pinacoteca, Parque de la Memoria, the Cultural Center of Memory Haroldo Conti, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Buenos Aires. His influence extends globally to institutions such as the Guggenheim, the University of Edinburgh, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, and the University of Oslo.

As the director of Barro Gallery (NYC, 2022-2024) and founder of The Slip (NYC, 2024 and current), an artist-driven space, Krochmalny has fostered institutional innovation and critical discourse on contemporary art. He has also played a pivotal role in editorial projects, co-founding and editing influential publications such as ramona (2006-2010), revista CIA (2011-2017), and revista Jennifer (2016-current). These projects have shaped debates in the art world, bridging the gap between practice and critique.

Syd Krochmalny’s literary oeuvre stands out for its bold exploration of contemporary sociocultural and artistic themes, encompassing poetry, novels, essays, and art books. Among his notable works are El tamaño de mi mundo, ramona: Debates en el arte al filo del milenio, Diarios del Odio, Débil, and Sueños, published by prominent houses like Caja Negra, Mansalva, and n direcciones. His writing delves into subjects such as the poetic dimensions of hate language, male prostitution and the commodification of masculinity, the fragility of masculinity in post-patriarchal contexts, and the intersections of psychoanalysis and photomontage in postwar Argentina. Krochmalny also reimagines forgotten poetic and literary movements, crafting speculative narratives that blend fiction and history to challenge conventional understandings of culture. Combining rigorous research with experimental storytelling, his work blurs the boundaries between fiction and ethnography, literature and history, poetry and science, offering a provocative and deeply reflective lens on contemporary dynamics.

In addition to his academic achievements—a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires and postdoctoral research at Columbia University—Krochmalny served as the Pedagogical Director of the Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas in Buenos Aires (2009-2019). His teaching and research have profoundly influenced artists and thinkers across universities in Latin America, the USA, Europe, and Asia.

Since 2008, Krochmalny was a founding member of the collective Sociología Contrataca (2008-2015), a creative space for initiatives that merge art and social sciences, formed by sociologists and artists at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires. This collective explored the intersections between artistic practices and sociological inquiry, emphasizing innovative methods that challenge rigid academic frameworks. By integrating scientific and creative approaches, Sociología Contrataca fostered experimental research through performance, multimedia, and relational aesthetics, expanding the boundaries of both disciplines.

As a member of the committee for the Memorial For Those Who Did Not Fall In War (MNW) at Columbia University’s Global Center for Peace Innovation, Krochmalny contributes to a groundbreaking initiative redefining the emblem of war’s suffering—the memorial—within the ecopolitical realities of the 21st century. Through the MNW Interdisciplinary Lab, he collaborates with global experts to address the far-reaching impacts of conflict, including ecological destruction, cultural erasure, and military pollution. Additionally, as an artist and curator at the MNW Art Gallery, he fosters innovative dialogues through exhibitions, workshops, and collaborations, advancing global peace innovation and ecological justice.

In 2024, Krochmalny founded The Slip, a contemporary art space in NYC dedicated to fostering innovative global perspectives, with a focus on the Global South. The Slip bridges artistic and cultural communities, reinterpreting the area’s legacy. Through impactful exhibitions, thought-provoking talks, and inclusive public programs, The Slip advances a transformative vision of contemporary art that embraces collaboration, reimagines history, and opens bold creative possibilities.

Krochmalny is also a member of The Argentine International, a collective that connects artists and researchers to highlight the interplay between Argentine culture and global artistic practices. This initiative fosters cross-cultural dialogue and explores how Argentine perspectives contribute to reshaping contemporary art narratives.
